Parthenium - farmer killer
Do you know what this plant does ?
->Invades the areas through wind, water, seeds, vehicles
etc..,
->Made its debut in India after 1950s from North America
through Wheat which was imported in a large amount
->Now made more than 25 million hectares of landed
unusable
->Causes asthma, allergy to humans and affect animals
also
->Has 25,000 seeds in a plant and capable of making your
whole land useless in few years
->Degrades a farmers income by more than 40 %
Where can it be seen?
->Roadsides ,
barren lands, cultivated lands
->Nowadays it is
rare to see a land without parthenium plant
Techniques found till
now to Kill it without chemicals:
->Mexican beetles -A beetle which feeds on the
parthenium plant which can immensely reduce its growth .
->Crop rotation in
farming lands- Cultivating variety of plants season after season reduces
the immune power of the plant and reduces its effects.
->False seed bed: Duplicate
cultivation- few months before cultivation we can plant some false seedlings
and water it .It will grow the weed fast which can be ploughed or tilled after
the seeds germinate and start grow for 2-3 weeks
->Cover crops over the
barren lands: The crops which can suppress the growth of such weeds .They
grow past the weed and don’t allow it to get sunlight.
